The overall objectives of DISCOS are:
- On the scientific level: To combine empirical and conceptual research in order to develop a multi-level, dynamic model of the embodied human self and its disorders by
- determining the role of neurobiological, psychological and sociocultural factors for the development of a coherent self
- identifying dysfunctional mechanisms and influences leading to disturbances of self-coherence
- On the educational level: To enable young European researchers to acquire high expertise and know how concerning all levels of the self by
- implementing a thorough disciplinary training in one of the core approaches to the self
- imparting an integrative viewpoint and interdisciplinary style of thinking
- On the societal level: To bring the framework model of the self to bear on therapeutic interventions and ethical perspectives by
- developing therapeutic guidelines for the integrated use of biological, psychological and social interventions in the treatment of disorders of the self
- transferring the gained knowledge to relevant social institutions and to the public, in particular, to stakeholders in the public health system regarding therapeutic guidelines.
The major breakthrough to be expected from DISCOS will be an integrative framework for research and interventions on the embodied human self that will overcome the fragmentation of approaches and disciplines in the field.
